Word on the Street about the 10-DAY GREEN SMOOTHIE CLEANSE
To be fair and balanced, I had to find a couple of raving and a couple of real naysayers on Amazon, like verified and badge-wearing Amazon user “Knitting Ninja” (Jun 2017, 1 star), who says,
10-DAY GREEN SMOOTHIE CLEANSE Claims
If you adhere strictly to the 10-Day Green Smoothie regime, you’ll lose 10 to 15 pounds, cravings will disappear, as will bloating, and your digestion will be improved. But that’s not all; on the JJ Smith 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, the claim is, you’ll experience mental clarity, have increased energy and you will sleep better. [1] Wow. Sign me up, right? The 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse is a detox program where, if you do the full cleanse, you consume primarily smoothies—60 ounces a day—comprised of leafy green vegetables, fruits, and water. It’s best to drink a quarter every three hours or a third every four hours or so. Or sip throughout the day, as long as you get as close to that 60 ounces. Snack on crunchy veggies like carrots, cucumbers and celery or much on apples. And, include high-protein snacks like hard-boiled eggs, and a handful of raw, unsalted seeds or nuts. And don’t forget the water: a gallon a day in addition to the smoothie (don’t sub out smoothie for water; it’s not the same). And that is it. You are forbidden from eating refined sugars of any kind. No refined flours/carbs (white breads, pastas, rice, potatoes; you know the drill). No meat, and no dairy. Coffee, soda (even diet), and any alcohol are out. Absolutely nothing processed or fried. If ten days of smoothies-only is just not doable, the modified plan has you eat one meal a day, though it must be a healthy one like a salad, sauteed vegetables, and a small piece of broiled or baked chicken or fish. But why a detox? Why a cleanse? JJ says one of the reasons we are overweight is our bodies are full of toxins: When the body is overloaded with toxins, it transfers energy away from burning calories to work harder to detoxify the body. In other words, the body does not have the energy to burn calories. However, when the body is efficiently getting rid of toxins, the energy can be used to burn fat. The following symptoms indicate the presence of excess toxins in the body: bloating, constipation, indigestion, low energy, fatigue/brain fog, depression, weight gain, chronic pain, infections, allergies, headaches, and gut/digestion problems. [1] (Page 2) The theory is that if you:
- crave sweets, bread, pasta, white rice, and/or potatoes;
- eat processed foods;
- feel tired, fatigued, or sluggish or conversely anxious, antsy, or stressed;
- don’t get enough sleep;
- have breakouts;
- aren’t always “regular;”
- smoke (or ever smoked) or exposed to secondhand smoke;
- are overweight or have cellulite fat deposits;
- have a job where you’re exposed to environmental toxins;
- live in or near an urban area;
- ever been on antibiotics or birth control;
and a list of about 20 other everyday life things, you need a detox. JJ claims (page 5) you’ll: significantly benefit from detoxifying your body, which could lead to weight loss and improved health and vitality. It is strongly recommended that you look into different ways to detoxify the body. Here’s the thing: she admits, Although our bodies have the ability to eliminate toxins, it’s when the body gets overloaded with toxins that it stores them in fat cells. Fat cells don’t get broken down very easily, so they literally weigh down the body and make it bigger. As toxins accumulate, we begin to experience health problems like allergies, migraines, major diseases, and fatigue/low energy. (page 5)

This is not astrophysics, people. Everything on the ingredient list for the 10-day cleanse is awesome, good-for-you food. And at only ten days, it’s probably safe. The question science has raised is this: “Do we need to detox our bodies when the body does it all by itself?” The jury is out on this one. Kind of. MayoClinic.comsays there is negligible evidence that detoxes or cleanses eliminate toxins from the body, rather,
“the kidneys and liver are generally quite effective at filtering and eliminating most ingested toxins.” [4]
The Mayo Clinicdoes agree that people often claim to feel more focused, with more energy, healthier, and improved after a cleanse, but here’s why: It may be due in part to the fact that a detox diet eliminates highly processed foods that have solid fats and added sugar. Simply avoiding these high-calorie low-nutrition foods for a few days may be part of why people feel better. And most health professionals aren’t jumping up and down about colon cleansing, as is required with the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse (and as is often the case with many different detox diets). Colon cleansing can cause cramping, bloating, nausea, and vomiting, and dehydration may also be an issue, the Mayo Clinic says. [4] That all said, Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. says,

The Bottom Line: Is the 10-DAY GREEN SMOOTHIE CLEANSE Worth a Try?
Depends. The best way to detox your body is arguably through good nutrition. But then there is a question that has been argued by many doctors and researches if your body even needs any help detoxing itself or is it a perfectly organizing mechanism capable of doing it itself as long as clean and mindful nutrition is implemented? But good nutrition that is not a diet, cleanse or temporary fix has to be—or become—a way of life. I agree with the Mayo Clinic: if you simply need a jump-start, or a foundation from which to build a new way of eating to live and not living to eat, the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse sounds like a plan.
